Settlers of Porthcawl

CubeX developed and manufactured bespoke textured UHPC panels forming an artificial reef at the base of Porthcawl’s Grade II listed Western Breakwater. The project combined heritage protection, coastal resilience and marine habitat creation in a single engineered solution.

Built in 1828, the Western Breakwater at Porthcawl has protected the coastline from severe wave action for almost two centuries. As a Grade II listed structure, the breakwater required a sensitive approach to repair and future resilience, particularly as rising sea levels and more severe coastal conditions increase the pressures placed on historic maritime infrastructure.

Working with Arup, Bridgend County Borough Council and Swansea University, CubeX Industries contributed to the development of an innovative eco-engineering intervention at the base of the breakwater. Rather than altering the historic structure itself, a modular artificial reef was created on the horizontal toe, allowing biodiversity enhancements to be introduced while respecting the heritage significance of the original breakwater.

CubeX developed bespoke moulds and precision-cast a series of hexagonal SeaHive panels, arranged in a beehive configuration. Thirteen different surface patterns were incorporated, including textured reliefs, shell-inspired motifs and water-retaining features designed to mimic the complexity of natural rocky shore habitats. The varied geometries were intended to encourage colonisation by marine organisms including seaweeds, anemones and the protected honeycomb worm.

UHPC was particularly suited to this demanding marine application because of its exceptional strength, durability and low permeability. Three concrete formulations were trialled, including an innovative mix incorporating locally sourced crushed cockle shells and ash. The combination of durable material technology and carefully engineered surface texture allowed the panels to serve both as robust coastal elements and as potential habitats for marine life.

The project demonstrates how advanced concrete technology can extend beyond conventional structural performance. By combining precision mould-making, UHPC development and ecological design, CubeX helped create a solution that supports the protection of historic coastal infrastructure while introducing new opportunities for marine biodiversity.
